Payment links: point your buy and pricing buttons at your own checkout

Anticode sites take payment through a link from your own payment provider. Paste a checkout link from Stripe Payment Links, PayPal, Gumroad, Lemon Squeezy, Shopify or Whop into the payment-link connector, and the buy and pricing buttons on your pages open that checkout in a new tab. Card details go only to your provider; your site never handles them.

Why a link rather than a checkout on the page

Taking card payments directly means handling card data, tax, receipts, refunds and disputes. Payment providers already do all of that, and most of them will give you a hosted checkout page with a single address. For a small business selling a few products, a class pass or a subscription, that address is often all a website needs: a button that sends the buyer somewhere trustworthy to pay. It also keeps your published pages free of scripts, which is how Anticode's pages are built.

Setting it up

  1. In your provider, create a payment link or checkout page for what you sell, and copy its address. It must start with https://.
  2. In Anticode's dashboard, open Connectors, choose Payment link, paste the address and save.
  3. When you build, tick payments as a must-have, or ask for it later ("add payments"). The change log notes that the buttons use your payment link from Connectors.
  4. Rebuild or republish the site. Buttons pick up the link when the page is built, so a site that's already live keeps its old link until you publish again.

Most people who search for how to add payment link to website buttons expect the change to appear at once. Steps three and four are the ones they miss: saving the link alone doesn't change a live page, because the address is written into the HTML when the page is built, not looked up when a visitor clicks.

Links open with noopener and noreferrer, as Sentinel's checks require for new tabs, so the checkout page can't reach back into your site.

Why the link is stored in the open

Other connectors, such as Slack or HubSpot, hold secrets: anyone with the webhook or token could post to your channel or read your contacts, so those are encrypted and never shown again. A payment link is the opposite. Its whole purpose is to be clicked by strangers, and it's written into your public pages. Anticode therefore keeps it as ordinary configuration you can see and edit, and refuses it if you try to submit it as a secret. That's also why you should never paste a provider's secret API key here; the link is the only thing it needs.

When a payment link isn't enough

  • One link per account. Every pricing and buy button points at the same checkout. If you sell several products, use a provider page that lists them all, such as a store or product catalogue page, rather than a single-item link.
  • No cart. Visitors can't add several items and pay once on your site. If a basket matters, a full e-commerce platform is the better fit.
  • No inventory, shipping or tax handling on Anticode's side; your provider handles what it supports.
  • No confirmation in Anticode. Orders and receipts live in your provider's dashboard, not in Anticode's.
  • On-site payments are switched off. Anticode has built pay pages that take card payments directly, but they aren't available today, so links are the way to take payment.

Questions people ask

Which providers work?

Any provider that gives you an https:// checkout address. The connector is set up with Stripe Payment Links, PayPal, Gumroad, Lemon Squeezy, Shopify and Whop in mind.

Does Anticode take a cut of my sales?

Sales through a payment link happen entirely at your provider, under its terms. See pricing for what Anticode's plans cost.

Can I use different links for different plans?

No. The connector holds one link and every pricing and buy button uses it. Point it at a provider page that offers each plan, or export the site to Next.js and set each button yourself.

Can model-written apps take payments?

No. Apps run in a sandbox with no network or payments; anything like a checkout is simulated and labelled as demo data.
