Choosing a brutalist website template, and what you'll still change

A good brutalist website template hands you a structure: a visible grid, one heavy typeface with a deliberate scale, hard borders and plain, working components. The sample content is the least useful part. Judge it by what survives once you replace the words and images with your own, and expect to change the colour, the copy and some section order.

What the template should give you

The style lives in a few structural decisions, so those are what you're paying for (or downloading) when you pick a brutalism website template. If the following aren't there, the template is a theme with black borders, not a system you can build on.

A grid you can see
Rules or borders that mark sections, columns and list rows, with one consistent thickness (2px is common) rather than a mix.
One typeface, with a scale
A heavy grotesque, often condensed, with a few defined sizes for headline, section title, body and small print.
Square, plain components
Buttons, inputs, cards and tables with square corners and visible edges, styled once and reused.
A clear action style
One filled colour or a solid black block for the main button, so it stands out from the outlined content boxes.
Working basics
A page language, a mobile viewport, labelled form fields, visible keyboard focus and a reduced-motion rule.

How to judge a brutalist template before you commit

  1. Ignore the demo copy and photos. Mentally replace them with your own plainer material. Many templates look good only because of a striking sample photograph.
  2. Open it on a phone. Big condensed headlines must wrap or scale; offset shadows and thick borders shouldn't push content off the right edge at 375px.
  3. Tab through it. If you can't see where the keyboard focus is, every page you build on it inherits that problem.
  4. Look at the body text. Brutalist templates sometimes set paragraphs in tiny monospace; it should be 16px or more with comfortable line height.
  5. Count the components. A template with one button style, one card style and one form style is easier to keep consistent than one with twelve variants.
  6. Check the code. For a brutalist HTML template, plain semantic HTML and a short stylesheet are part of the point. A page that needs a heavy framework and several scripts to show bordered boxes is working against the style.

What you'll still change

Typical edits after choosing a brutalist template
AreaWhy it needs changing
Headline and copyBrutalism makes words very prominent, so generic sample copy is more visible than in any other style
Action colourSample electric blue or orange may clash with your brand; one colour should be yours
Section orderTemplates lead with a manifesto block; a shop or venue needs dates, prices or products higher up
ImagesRaw style suits real, slightly rough photography; stock photos look especially out of place
Contact and footerReplace sample addresses, socials and links; dead links stand out on a page with this much visible structure
Navigation labelsKeep them plain words, even if the template uses clever ones

Who should use one

A brutalist template suits record labels, galleries, studios, event series, zines and personal portfolios, where the look supports the message. For services that need to reassure (healthcare, legal, finance), the template's confidence can read as hostility. If you're unsure whether the style is right at all, read brutalist web design first, and compare the softer, more colourful neo-brutalism.

Brutalist starting points in Anticode

Anticode offers two. The Brutalist design system builds a site in the style from your brief: Archivo in condensed uppercase headlines at weight 900, 2px black rules under the header and between sections, square corners, hard 6px offset shadows on images and cards, and a concrete-grey ground in the light theme with a near-black ground in the dark one. Its default action colour is a strong blue in light and orange in dark, and you can change it to any of the eight action colours in the visual editor.

The Static Bloom Records template in the template gallery is an indie label site in a brutalist zine style, with releases, tracklists and gigs. Using it copies it into your project with no model call and nothing off your limits, and you change it from there by describing the edits in words. It's an app written by Anticode's model rather than a page from the Brutalist system, so its details differ.

Questions people ask

What makes a template brutalist rather than just minimal?

Visible structure: thick rules, hard edges, heavy type and plain components. A minimal template hides structure; a brutalist one shows it.

Is a brutalist HTML template better than a page-builder theme?

Often. The style suits plain HTML and a small stylesheet, which also loads quickly and is easy to edit by hand.

Can I use a brutalist template for a business site?

Yes, for businesses whose customers value independence and craft. Keep prices, contact details and navigation plain and easy to find.
