A pet store website for the independent shop on the high street

Pet owners check an independent shop's website to see whether you stock their animal's food, when you're open, and whether you offer services such as grooming or nail trims. Many also want a regular delivery of heavy sacks. A pet store website built with Anticode covers those well. A full online shop with stock, repeat orders and shipping needs a store platform linked from the site.

Food brands are the first search

Owners are loyal to a diet, especially when an animal has a sensitive stomach or a vet's recommendation. They search for the brand and their town. A clear brands page, grouped by animal (dogs, cats, small animals, birds, fish, reptiles) and by type (complete dry, wet, raw, grain-free, prescription diets if you're allowed to sell them), answers that search and saves a phone call. Say whether you can order in a brand you don't usually carry, and how long it takes.

Hold the list in a CMS collection with fields for brand, animal, food type and a short note. Staff can add a new line in the dashboard when the rep visits, and drop a discontinued one the same day. Raw food stockists should say what's in the freezers and whether owners need to bring a cool bag.

Services, booked by the slot

Many independent shops run services alongside the tills: dog grooming, nail clipping, a self-service dog wash, small-animal boarding, or a weigh-in clinic. Single appointments suit Anticode's booking calendar. The owner picks the service, a day and a time, and gives their name, phone and email. Each slot takes one booking per service, so a grooming table can't be double-booked, and you get each booking by email.

The calendar's form is fixed, so it won't ask for breed, size or coat condition. Ask when you confirm, or keep a short note beside the calendar explaining what to tell you. There are no recurring bookings, so a dog groomed every six weeks is booked each time, and the calendar can't take a deposit.

Local delivery and regular orders

Heavy sacks of food and cat litter are the reason many owners would choose an independent shop that delivers. Without an online shop, a custom order form works well: name, address and delivery area, phone, the brand and size of each item, quantity, how often (weekly, monthly), preferred delivery day and how they'll pay. A custom form can carry up to 30 plain-text fields, so a regular order fits on one form.

When it's sent, the form's site function can run a small formula. With quantities entered as numbers and your prices set in the formula, the thank-you page can show an order total, along with a note that you'll confirm stock and delivery. Nothing is calculated while the customer is typing, because the page runs no scripts. Orders can go to a Google Sheet through a connector so the delivery round is planned from one list. Customers pay on delivery or through a payment link you send; Anticode doesn't take payments itself.

Advice pages that build trust

Independent pet shops win on knowledge. Short advice pages, written by your staff, answer questions people search for: setting up a first aquarium, which hay for rabbits, switching a dog to a new food gradually, keeping guinea pigs warm in winter. Keep advice general, and send owners to a vet for anything about illness, injury or a prescription diet. A generated pet shop site tends to fill these pages with vague tips; a page that names the products you actually stock and the mistakes customers actually make is more useful.

If you sell live animals, many places license pet sales and set rules on what you must tell buyers. Publish what your licence and local rules require, and be clear about how you rehome, what care sheet you provide and any age limits for buyers.

Opening hours and the basics

  • Hours, including late nights and holiday closures, near the top of every page.
  • Parking and loading: whether staff carry sacks to the car.
  • Dogs welcome in store, if they are.
  • Loyalty schemes and how they work, if you run one.
