Divi alternatives: leaving WordPress upkeep behind, or deciding to stay
Divi is a theme and visual builder for WordPress, sold with unlimited site use, so it's popular with freelancers and agencies who build many sites. The case for Divi alternatives is rarely about Divi's editor. It's about the WordPress host, updates and plugins each of those sites needs. If your business is built on WordPress, Divi is probably still right for you.
What a Divi membership covers
Elegant Themes' Divi page calls Divi a website building framework for WordPress, with drag-and-drop editing on the page itself and an AI agent that builds layouts from a written request. Its FAQ says memberships don't come with hosting, though Divi works with any web host and Elegant Themes sells separate Divi Hosting. Divi Cloud stores layouts and snippets for reuse on other Divi sites.
| Plan | Price | Includes |
|---|---|---|
| Divi | $89 billed yearly | Divi and Divi Dash, unlimited sites, support |
| Divi Lifetime | $249 once | The same, with no renewal |
| Divi Pro | $277 billed yearly | Adds Divi AI, Divi Cloud, Divi VIP and Divi Teams |
| Divi Lifetime + Pro | $297 today, then $212 a year for the Pro services | Lifetime Divi with the Pro services yearly |
The join page FAQ explains what lapses: when a cancelled yearly plan reaches the end of its term, you lose the members area, new themes, theme updates and support, but you can keep using themes you've already downloaded. So a Divi site doesn't switch off when you stop paying. What stops is the stream of updates, while WordPress and every plugin on the site still need theirs.
Before you leave Divi
- Export the content. WordPress's Tools Export screen saves posts, pages, custom fields, categories, tags and users as an XML file. Divi's layouts don't come along in a form another builder can read.
- Save images separately. The export lists content rather than image files.
- Keep the page addresses. Copy the URL of every page that ranks or gets linked to, so you can match them or redirect. Anticode has no per-site redirect manager, so old addresses it doesn't match won't redirect there.
- Check what each module did. Contact forms, sliders, galleries, maps and pop-ups each need a decision: rebuild, link out or drop.
- For agencies, list sites by client. Note who owns each domain and hosting account before anything moves.
Four options to compare
| Option | Suits | From its own pages |
|---|---|---|
| Elementor | Staying on WordPress with a different editor | Its builder page describes a free plugin with the core editor and a Pro tier that adds a theme builder, WooCommerce builder and forms |
| WordPress.com | Keeping WordPress while someone else runs the server | Its pricing page lists plugin and theme uploads from the Personal plan |
| Squarespace | Hosted sites with a store and no plugins to maintain | Its pricing page lists four plans from Basic to Advanced, with code injection from Core |
| Anticode | Client and small-business sites described in words, with nothing to update | No WordPress import, no plugins, English only |
Elementor and WordPress.com change the editor or the hosting but keep WordPress. Squarespace and Anticode remove it, which is the point for most people searching for a Divi alternative.
Where Anticode fits, including for agencies
Anticode replaces assembly with a conversation. The Architect asks up to three questions that change the build and shows a plan before building. The design engine holds each site to one of seven design systems, from Editorial to Swiss, with one font family and one action colour, and it publishes plain HTML and CSS with no scripts, so there's no theme or plugin to update.
For people who build for clients, client review links let a client comment on sections without an account, team workspaces let colleagues build and publish together, and the Agency plan publishes client sites with no Anticode branding. See white-label delivery for how that runs. Contact forms save enquiries and can email the owner; buy buttons point at a payment link from Stripe, PayPal, Gumroad, Lemon Squeezy, Shopify or Whop. Prices are on /pricing.
What Anticode can't do that Divi can
- No WordPress. No plugins, no WooCommerce, no wp-admin for clients, and no import of existing Divi sites.
- No embeds or video on pages. Published pages can't embed maps, video players or third-party widgets; link to them instead.
- One payment link per account. Every buy button opens the same checkout, and there's no cart.
- Set booking times. The booking calendar uses six fixed times a day; clients can't set their own hours.
- English only. No multilingual sites, which matters for agencies with clients abroad.
When Divi is still the right choice
If your agency is standardised on WordPress, with saved Divi layouts, a hosting arrangement and clients trained in the editor, the unlimited-site licence spreads one fee across every site, and moving every client is a large project for little gain. Divi also suits sites that need plugins Anticode has no answer for. A lifetime licence holder who maintains sites happily has even less reason to move. Consider a switch site by site, starting with the small brochure sites that need the least.
Questions people ask
What happens to my Divi sites if I stop renewing?
Elegant Themes says you lose updates, new themes and support at the end of the term, but you can keep using themes you've already downloaded.
Does Divi include hosting?
No. Divi's page says memberships don't include hosting, though Divi Hosting is sold separately with Divi pre-installed.
Which Divi alternatives don't need WordPress?
Of the options above, Squarespace and Anticode host the site themselves with no WordPress install. Elementor and WordPress.com both run on WordPress.
Can Anticode deliver client sites without its branding?
Yes, on the Agency plan. Paid plans also remove the small badge that free sites carry.
